These Divine Macaroons are aptly named and I really liked them, as did my very willing recipe guinea pigs—none of whom are actually wheat free, gluten free, dairy free, or vegan, but ...
Recently I was excited to receive a copy from the publisher of Gluten-Free Tips and Tricks for Vegans by Jo Stepaniak. So, in the spirit of full disclosure, although I received the book free of charge I'm not being paid to write this review.
Gluten-Free Tips and Tricks for Vegans is a bit of a misleading title. Yes, there are tips and tricks, but the majority of the book is recipes.
Someone new to gluten free cooking would find ...
Coconut palm sugar isn't made from coconuts—despite its name; it is actually made from the sap of coconut palm flower buds. The sap is dried and condensed into a brown sugar with a caramel taste. Because it requires no other processing it can be considered a natural sweetener, and also naturally gluten free.
Coconut palm sugar still contains the same calories as sugar—approximately 15 calories per teaspoon, and the same carbohydrate as sugar—4g per teaspoon. However, it is lower in fructose than table sugar; coconut palm sugar comprises approximately 75 percent sucrose, and approximately 5 percent ...

Available now for pre-order, the Nima portable gluten sensor promises a result showing whether a food contains gluten in just 2 minutes.
It's operation is simple, put a food sample into a testing pod, insert the pod into Nima, and wait 2 minutes; a smile on the display indicates that no gluten is detected. Though it only detects gluten presence of 20 parts per million or more.
6SensorLabs, the manufacturers of the Nima also have versions for peanut and milk testing in development.

If you have gluten free Cheerios or Honey Nut Cheerios in your gluten free house then you need to check this recall very carefully.
General Mills have recalled 1.8 million boxes of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios because they contain wheat. During the manufacturing process wheat was used in the gluten free oat flour system, causing the cereal to contain wheat.
According to the General Mills news release the following codes are included in the recall:
Having just returned from our two-yearly-ish trip to the UK to do the family duty visits, I was sorry to say goodbye to The Brook Inn and their fantastic gluten free pub fare.
I blogged about their food two years ago after my last visit (read Great gluten free pub grub at The Brook Inn, Washbrook ). At that time the brewery was selling the pub and the local community were banding together to see if they could rescue it, and keep it as a valuable resource for the village.
Well I'm very pleased to say that The Brook Inn ...

From August 3, 2015 celiac, and wheat allergy or intolerance sufferers should avoid Burger King French Fries if they have previously been eating them.

change in cooking procedure for our French Fries. Starting on August 3rd 2015, French Fries will no longer be cooked in a separate fryer. They will be cooked in the same fryer

I read a disturbing article this week on the latest food fraud. According to Which? dried oregano is the latest of the many food frauds to be uncovered. In their study, carried out by the Global Institute of Food Security, 78 samples of dried oregano were analysed and 19 of those samples were found to contain other products adulterating the oregano. In some cases less than 33% of the oregano in the package was actually oregano.
This is of course a big problem for people with food allergies or celiac disease. We have to take it on trust that the ...
A pill may soon be available to allow celiac disease sufferers to enjoy previously forbidden food and drink on an occasional basis. Associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Alberta, Hoon Sunwoo, has developed a pill that can be taken before eating gluten containing food or drink. The pill uses egg yolk to bind with the gluten and allow it to pass through the body without causing damage to the villi in the gut.
Although the pill's protective effects are short-term it would allow a celiac disease sufferer to have something like pizza, or beer, without the ...
Although blueberries are generally available year round, it's the summer when the absolute best blueberries are in the shops and markets. These plump blue fruit have a relatively low caloric value, and a low glycemic load—which makes them a good choice for a snack anytime.
Blueberries also make the best muffins, and in these sugar free muffins you can't notice the missing sugar because of the blueberries luscious taste. I make these muffins almost every week because my husband can't eat sugar post-cancer, but he can cope with a little natural sugars, so this recipe makes ...

What are FODMAPs? FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates including fructose, fructans, galactose, galactans, lactose, and sugar alcohols e.g. sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol, and other polyols.
FODMAP is derived from Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols —so you can see why it's shortened to FODMAP.
Dr. Peter Gibson and Dr. Susan Shepherd, from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, developed the low FODMAP diet after a study indicated that FODMAPs were poorly absorbed in the small intestine; a contributing factor in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal disorders. The study concluded that adopting a low FODMAP diet could reduce gastrointestinal symptoms ...
The Kansas Wheat Commission is paying for research to identify the DNA in wheat that causes a celiac reaction.
The research is being undertaken by Dr Chris Miller, senior director of research, innovation, and quality at Engrain. The target is to create a celiac-safe wheat, which will hopefully solve the problem of making tasty, well-risen celiac friendly bread.
While this groundbreaking research, if successful, would help the millions of celiacs, there's no indication at this stage whether it would also be beneficial to wheat allergy sufferers.
Celiac safe wheat is certainly some years away yet, but researchers are working ...

General Mills, the manufacturers of Cheerios, have announced that this July five of their Cheerios cereal products will go gluten free: Original Cheerios, Honey Nut, Multi-Grain, Apple Cinnamon, and Frosted.
Using a proprietary process they will be able to ensure that no wheat, rye, or barley is present in the oats used. This ensures that they will meet the FDA's guidelines for products labelled gluten free.
The Multi-Grain Cheerios will have their wheat and barley replaced with sorghum and millet, so the taste will change. However, the other four Cheerios flavours will stay the same.
Unfortunately General Mills don ...

I really liked these Blueberry Toaster Pastries, as did the other tasters. The pastry was crisp and buttery tasting, and it didn't crumble—making these an ideal school lunch item as they are pretty robust and don't fall to pieces when you eat them.
They're low in refined sugar ...
In 2011 we were asked to review The Allergy-Free Cook Bakes Bread: Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free by Laurie Sadowski ( read our review ), and we loved her bread recipes. Laurie Sadowski now has a new book, The Allergy-Free Cook Makes Pies and Desserts , her publisher sent us a copy to review and Laurie kindly gave us permission to share a couple of the recipes with you.
The bread recipes from her previous book were great—we were allowed to post the fantastic
Wholesome
Flax Bread recipe
on our site—so we were really excited to receive this new recipe book.

Because I long ago gave up trying to eat out due to a lack of education and understanding in restaurants that were really only paying lip service to 'gluten free' for profit motives, I just accepted that not eating out sucked. The one place I had been able to eat at reasonably confidently changed their chef, and the new chef changed their menu—you guessed it... they removed the only gluten free option.
So you can imagine my excitement when I was sitting having my hair cut a few months back and seeing an advert on the mirror for Canmore ...

Generally, no. But this answer refers to a brewery that also brews gluten containing beers, not a dedicated gluten free brewery, and is also more relevant for people with a wheat allergy.
Normally a brewery uses the same milling equipment for milling all grains used in their brewing process. For example, if wheat is being milled the equipment will most likely still contain particles of wheat after that milling process has been completed. So if barley is milled next it's using the same equipment that just contained wheat and there will most likely be wheat cross-contamination.
It's also ...
Normally we like to make baked goods from scratch, but not everyone has the time, or the ingredients. So we thought that we would test a
cake mix to see how easy it was, and how good it would taste. With school lunches needing to be kept interesting a sweet treat is always a good addition, so
we chose Kinnikinnick Chocolate Cake mix, after all, who doesn't love chocolate cake?
Kinnikinnick Chocolate Cake mix is gluten, dairy and nut free, as well as Kosher. The mix is produced in a dedicated gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, peanut free ...
School lunches that are appetising enough to encourage being eaten, rather than dumped and junk food substituted, are a challenge for all those busy moms and dads out there eagerly looking forward to the end of the school vacation period, though not necessarily looking forward to putting together bagged lunches for the coming term.
We've collated a few lunch ideas that may work well for wheat & gluten free school bagged lunches. Most schools have a "no nuts" policy, so we have used Sunbutter as an alternative in some recipes, there are also other nutfree butters available. Note: Some schools ...
Lupin flour is made from the legume of the sweet lupin, and is therefore related to other legumes such as peanuts and soybeans. The European white lupin has been eaten as a food by humans dating back to the ancient Egyptians, but use of the sweet lupin is relatively recent.
Lupin flour is high in protein, essential amino acids and fibre, is easily digestible, low GI, cholesterol free, an appetite suppressant, and wheat/gluten free.
Lupin flour can be used in gluten free baking, and like ...
Apple pie... great at any time of the year, but especially good with vanilla ice cream on hot summer days. Or serve it warm from the oven with hot custard poured over the top on those cold wintery days when comfort food is required. My favourite vanilla ice cream is So Delicious Dairy Free No Sugar Added Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, it's rich and creamy and almost virtuous in calories, or you can be really sinful and serve it with whipped cream or whipped coconut milk instead.
When I was growing up my Aunt used to make the absolute ...
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a guide for small food businesses to help them comply with new federal requirements for the voluntary use of the term "gluten free" on food products.
From August 5, 2014 all FDA-regulated food products labeled on or after that date, and bearing the gluten free claim, must comply with the rule's requirements.

Many celiac disease or gluten intolerance sufferers may not know about gluten ataxia as it's not something that is constantly in the media. So what is gluten ataxia? Gluten ataxia is a somewhat mysterious neurological condition related to gluten sensitivity, and while it is rare, it is a serious medical condition where it exists. As it's a progressive disease it can cause permanent damage to the cerebellum (part of your brain) if not treated promptly, however, many people struggle with symptoms for years because of the difficulty in diagnosing it.
It's also important to ...
Pasta—one of life's staples, great source of carbs, much loved by athletes around the world... unless you're a celiac.
20 years ago gluten free pasta was just plain nasty. If a wheat allergy or celiac disease sufferer wanted to eat pasta all they had available was corn pasta; in those days it was woefully horrible tasting and crumbled to little bits, but you had to take it or leave it.
Now we have an amazing selection of wheat free/gluten free pasta on the market, some better than others, but there is choice. And as everyone has ...

Potato starch is made from the starch extracted from potatoes then dried to form a very fine white powder. When using potato startch it's easy to end up with a fine white cloud of starch in the air if you're not careful when transferring from bag to utensil. It is naturally wheat free and gluten free.
Potato starch is ideal for thickening recipes like soups, sauces, gravy etc. It has a neutral taste and is excellent for using in wheat/gluten free baking as it has good binding characteristics. It also turns clear after heating ...
